Up Movie Review

Funny and poignant and full of life, Up easily qualifies as one of the best movies of the year so far. Go with someone you care about.
Tom Charity-CNN.com

The movie is packed with lovely jokes, some of them funny in inexplicable ways.
David Denby-New Yorker

The key to Pixar's success has always been the perfect blend of heart and humor -- and they've certainly done it again here.
Ben Mankiewicz-At the Movies

This is really special.
Ben Lyons-At the Movies

An exquisite work of cinematic art that also happens to be the funniest, most touching, most exciting and most entertaining movie released so far this year.
Lou Lumenick-New York Post

Its charms appear to have been applied with surgical precision; by the end, I felt expertly sutured, but not much else.
Stephanie Zacharek-Salon.com

The glory of Pixar's films as that they touched on universal themes, all the way through, that just happened to also tickle kids. This one starts out that way, and then settles comfortably into being a kids film.
Will Leitch-Deadspin

Quintessential Pixar.
Rob Humanick-Projection Booth

Has more heart and soul in its tiniest pixel than most competitors' movies can boast in their entirety.
Ali Gray-TheShiznit.co.uk

The pacing is perfect, the animation looks terrific, the emotional range is wide, and there are a few sly jokes you might not catch the first time around. That's okay; you'll want to see it a second time anyway.
Hank Sartin-Time Out Chicago

As corny as it sounds, Up soars to new animation heights.
James Plath-Movie Metropolis

No matter how you look at it, through the innocent eyes of a child or the wider, wiser worldview of an adult, the bright, buoyant Up brims with imagination, adventure, humor and heart.
Neil Pond-American Profile

The most successful moments use screenwriter Peterson's rapid-fire witty dialogue and sight gags.
Kelly Vance-East Bay Express

Everything else is up to the studio's usual standard, blending gorgeous and imaginative (but never gimmicky) animation with zippy storytelling, heartfelt sadness and laughs.
Matt Soergel-Florida Times-Union

You never know what you're going to get with this sort of thing, if people will sit on their laurels and bask in the concept or go to the effort of working out a compelling story. Luckily the folks at Pixar aren't known for taking the easy way out.
Joshua Starnes-ComingSoon.net

...an animated masterpiece...
David Nusair-Reel Film Reviews

Adventure is about escaping death's closure, but it's also about clinging to life's openness - letting one escapade's end evolve into something new. "Up" is a tremendously affecting story of indomitable love, infectious spirit and embraced possibilities.
Nick Rogers-Suite101.com

Has there ever been a bolder moment in a children's film than one in which the lead character essentially sets off on his final journey into the heavens?
Simon Miraudo-Quickflix

A vibrantly bubbly exploration of how life's great adventures can stem from death's gloomy depths
Matthew Pejkovic-Matt's Movie Reviews

The first from Pixar to be filmed in Disney Digital 3-D, Up looks and sounds great. The script is charming, touching and altogether delightful; the voice talent perfectly suited to the characters.
Jean Lowerison-San Diego Metropolitan

Disney/Pixar's Up is a triumphant masterstroke for the studio and their Teflon reputation.
Brian Orndorf-Dark Horizons

Up has much to offer kids but more to offer adults. We're so entertained we don't realize we're exploring tough questions. How faithful are we in the promises we make?
Jeffrey Overstreet-Looking Closer

Don't be surprised if Up is sitting pretty atop our top 10 films of the year list come the New Year.
Sam Bathe-Fan The Fire

A near-masterpiece.
Rob Humanick-Projection Booth

Once the balloons make their grand, eye-popping entrance in a kaleidoscope of color and texture, the film becomes chaotic and silly, and coasts downhill for the remainder.

My Best Friend's Girl Movie Review

There's something genuinely transgressive beneath the movie's rom-com surface, though director Howard Deutch keeps retreating to the safety of frat-boy humor.
Reece Pendleton-Chicago Reader

The inexplicable romantic comedy career of Dane Cook marches on.
Wesley Morris-Boston Globe

There are no surprises here, but speedy pacing and a smattering of laughs along the way, as well as a knowing turn by Alec Baldwin as Tank's even more piggish father, make My Best Friend's Girl a date not entirely to be skipped.
Laura Kern-New York Times

Ultimately, its most unforgivable sin is that it's simply not funny.
Michael Ordoña-Los Angeles Times

An ugly, strictly-for-meatheads comedy that can only be recommended to couples who wear matching Tie Domi Toronto Maple Leafs jerseys out on a date.
Stephen Cole-Globe and Mail

It borrows from much funnier movies such as Hitch, Wedding Crashers and My Best Friend's Wedding. Never has a romantic comedy seemed less romantic or less comedic.
Claudia Puig-USA Today

Inane, raunchy romantic comedy inspires no love.
S. Jhoanna Robledo-Common Sense Media

...ultimately falls prey to the melodramatic silliness that one has come to expect from the romantic comedy genre.
David Nusair-Reel Film Reviews

mostly unwatchable
Christopher Null-Filmcritic.com

This is one of those films that would be enormously improved by the arrival of 100 crazy Somali pirates who would proceed to take the entire cast hostage.
Christopher Tookey-Daily Mail [UK]

Tedious, largely unfunny and poorly written comedy with the least likeable collection of characters you'll see all year.
Matthew Turner-ViewLondon

Yet another in a continuing line of dismal Dane Cook so-called romantic comedies.
Pete Hammond-Hollywood.com

It's a wonder the guys don't just wear Flintstone loincloths. Now let's hear it: Yabba-dabba-don't.
Victor Olliver-Teletext

Any schmuck with a typewriter and a dirty mouth can test the limits of good taste; it's something else entirely to push the boundaries of narrative possibility and emotional empathy.
Josh Rosenblatt-Austin Chronicle

A rude, crude romantic comedy with a touch of nastiness that's refreshing and quite funny.
Jason Di Rosso-MovieTime, ABC Radio National

You should steer well clear of the nasty ideas that screenwriter Jordan Cahan has about relationships and how they work.
Colin Fraser-FILMINK (Australia)

A film that truly bites.
Leigh Paatsch-Daily Telegraph (Australia)

Dane Cook proves why he is one of American comedy's favourite big-time naughty boys in this fast, funny, foul-tongued but sweet-natured adult-skewed romantic comedy.
Jim Schembri-The Age (Australia)

The film veers off into that realm of unbelievability that I react against. But there is a certain fascination in watching Cook strut his stuff (and boy does he strut), and Kate Hudson is pleasant to watch.
Margaret Pomeranz-At the Movies (Australia)

If you like watching anarchy in action, this exhibition has its moments, but the anti-woman humour underpinning it -- and Cook's whole performance -- does cast a pall.
Sandra Hall-Sydney Morning Herald

'There's this guy, Tank, and other guys hire him to give their exes "emotional terrorism." It's a romantic comedy.''Can you throw in a cheap anti-Catholic and anti-Semitic joke? And have Tank tell some kids how to pull a brutal sexaul trick on a woman?'
Brian Gibson-Vue Weekly (Edmonton, Canada)

A raunchy vehicle for Dane Cook fans? A sprightly romance for Kate Hudson fans? A genial underdog comedy for Jason Biggs fans? The correct answer is: a big, steaming pile of horse manure.
Frank Lovece-Film Journal International

It works much better as a comedy, but by the end, the romantic aspect has taken over and there's not much humor to be found after the first half.
Austin Kennedy-Sin Magazine

It's coarse and funny, but there's something really endearing about this twisted romantic comedy in which the protagonist excels at being a self-proclaimed emotional terrorist
Louise Keller-Urban Cinefile

[Director Howard] Deutch passes the buck to his three stars...
Jim Lane-Sacramento News & Review

You can watch L'Heure d'été (Summer Hours) movie in HD without Downloading Free HEREThree siblings must come to terms with their mother's mortality as they decide what to do with her valuable belongings in this warm family drama from filmmaker Olivier Assayas. Hélène Berthier (Edith Scob) is about to turn 75, and her children are gathering at her home in the country for a party. Adrienne (Juliette Binoche) has flown in from New York City, where she lives with her boyfriend, James (Kyle Eastwood). Jérémie (Jérémie Renier) has taken a rare break from his globe-trotting business interests to stop by with his wife (Valérie Bonneton). And Frédéric (Charles Berling), the only one who lives close enough to visit regularly, has also come with his spouse, Lisa (Dominique Reymond). Hélène has inherited a large and valuable collection of art from her brother, and with her health beginning to fail, she approaches Frédéric and asks that he, Jérémie, and Adrienne come up with a plan to deal with the pieces after her death. Frédéric wants to keep the collection together and see if they can persuade a gallery to purchase and present them as a set. Jérémie and Adrienne have other ideas, but as he's pondering a business opportunity in China and she's planning on settling in America for good, they don't have as much influence over the final decision as Frédéric. L'Heure d'Été (aka Summer Hours) was produced in part by the celebrated French art gallery Musée d'Orsay, and was one of a handful of films created to honor the museum in its 20th anniversary year. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

L'Heure d'été (Summer Hours) Movie Review

Assayas' script is more allusive than demonstrative, with a distinct whiff of Eric Rohmer in its conversational blocks separated by fadeouts.
Derek Elley-Variety

n Summer Hours, Olivier Assayas's gently provocative rumination on family and possessions, a trio of siblings wrestles with the problem of what to do with the old homestead once Mother is gone.
Jonathan F. Richards-Film.com

Evocative look at a family trying to decide what to do with its treasures.
Ray Bennett-Hollywood Reporter

Where a Hollywood film of a family feuding over a fabulous estate would surely end with a slapped face and an infantry charge of lawyers, Assayas's work concludes with a smile and a shrug. Life goes on. What else can it do?
Stephen Cole-Globe and Mail

Performances in this small and profoundly eloquent film are superb, yet none redirects attention from Assayas's earnest meditation on the ravaging effects of a shrinking world on family traditions and entrenched personal relationships.
Greg Quill-Toronto Star

This is a movie that, for all its once-over-lightliness, stays with one. Given what it's about, and the intelligence of its makers, how could it not?
Peter Rainer-Christian Science Monitor

Has the feel, if not the look, of an old man's film, a meditation on the passing of time.
Kelly Vance-East Bay Express

...leisurely paced but intensely gripping film - which doesn't lend itself to facile capsulization - follows three generations of a French family as they prepare for the imminent death of their matriarch
Philip Martin-Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

manages a sense of genuine poignancy that never becomes sticky or sentimental
James Kendrick-Q Network Film Desk

The film resonates with emotions as authentic as the details. ... And it asks us to ponder what makes the objects in our lives meaningful.
Jeffrey Overstreet-Looking Closer

The film and its characters are smart, sincere and fully alive in ways we rarely have the opportunity to see.
Christopher Long-Movie Metropolis

The [movie's] concern might feel a little old-fashioned ... but in this film it's reasonably, solemnly, and levelheadedly expressed.
Jeffrey Chen-Window to the Movies

A subtle, flawlessly acted, keenly observed family drama and poignant meditation on memory, identity, and history in the age of postmodernism and globalization.
Emanuel Levy-EmanuelLevy.Com

A well-constructed film about the end of a life and uncertainty about the future.
Robert Roten-Laramie Movie Scope

Surprisingly wonderful, as if Assayas finally found a space in which to stretch out.
Jeffrey M. Anderson-Combustible Celluloid

The sheer banality of the proceedings -- appraisals! attorneys! -- threatens to rob those few poignant moments of their own dramatic value.
William Goss-Orlando Weekly

Supposedly a meditation on globalization and family ties, but to this reviewer it is much more of a French art movie version of Antique Roadshow.
Louis Proyect-rec.arts.movies.reviews

A lament for the lost luxuries of time and space.
Karina Longworth-SpoutBlog

Intense yet airy
Fernando F. Croce-CinePassion

A subdued, chatty and poignant family drama.
Dennis Schwartz-Ozus' World Movie Reviews

Offers the sense that what is now being dismantled was itself the result of people who in their own way had rejected an earlier past.
Ken Hanke-Mountain Xpress (Asheville, NC)

A keenly observed, typically high-quality family drama of the sort only the French seem capable of making anymore.
Marc Mohan-Oregonian

The acting is superb and the cinematography is top drawer. French films are not shy about tackling real-life issues in a meaningful way
Keith Cohen-Entertainment Spectrum

It's not sentimental. Yet it's devastating.
Robert W. Butler-Kansas City Star

Detention Of The Dead Movie Review

Is there anything worse than a horror movie that isn't scary? Yes - a horror-comedy that's neither scary nor funny.
Robert Abele-Los Angeles Times

While it features some pleasing tech credits and an engaged cast, the effort swings too wildly from sensitivity to slapstick, resulting in a disagreeably disorienting viewing experience.
Brian Orndorf-Blu-ray.com

It hits way more than it misses, and there are some truly shining moments strewn throughout the flick to keep even the hungriest of gorehounds satisfied.

You can watch A Band Called Death movie in HD without Downloading Free HEREBefore Bad Brains, the Sex Pistols or even the Ramones, there was a band called Death. Punk before punk existed, three teenage brothers in the early '70s formed a band in their spare bedroom, began playing a few local gigs and even pressed a single in the hopes of getting signed. But this was the era of Motown and emerging disco. Record companies found Death's music - and band name - too intimidating, and the group were never given a fair shot, disbanding before they even completed one album. Equal parts electrifying rockumentary and epic family love story, A Band Called Death chronicles the incredible fairy-tale journey of what happened almost three decades later, when a dusty 1974 demo tape made its way out of the attic and found an audience several generations younger. Playing music impossibly ahead of its time, Death is now being credited as the first black punk band (hell...the first punk band!), and are finally receiving their long overdue recognition as true rock pioneers. A Band Called Death Movie Review

Their story can feel almost too ready-made for the telling, but it's well worth a listen.
Nicolas Rapold-New York Times

... a must-watch for fans of punk music, vinyl record wonks, or even those interested ... a visionary entertainment dream.
Kate Erbland-MSN Movies

[A] generous, spirited documentary [that captures] one of the strangest and most inspiring of all family stories of tragedy and triumph that this crazy country has produced.
Andrew O'Hehir-Salon.com

It was fans' ardor that began the Death revival and propels the movie's exhilarating second half.
Mark Jenkins-Washington Post

If you're looking for a 96-minute jolt of joy, look no further than this uplifting, well-made documentary ...
Jeff Shannon-Seattle Times

The film is nothing much cinematically, and some of the narrative details and circumstances seemed fudged. But it's a great story, told with a fan's honest appreciation.
Michael Phillips-Chicago Tribune

Even if you didn't know a thing about the band and you don't even typically listen to the kind of music they play, you're going to find yourself thankful that the Hackney brothers are now in your life.
Matt Shiverdecker-Paste Magazine

The story of Death sure adds an interesting and virtually unknown footnote to the annals of punk rock.
Marjorie Baumgarten-Austin Chronicle

Still sounding amazingly fresh, the brothers' good spirits and storytelling are as infectiously appealing as their punk rock seems to be a fountain of youth
Nora Lee Mandel-Film-Forward.com

In the vein of Searching for Sugar Man, this earnest and engaging doc again proves that all the best nonfiction music stories aren't tied up in bitterness and acrimony, and certainly aren't related to any level of achieved fame.
Brent Simon-Shockya.com

More than anything else, the movie is about family -- how we support them and they support us, what we sacrifice for them, how they inspire us and hold us back, what we tell them and what we leave out.
Joe Gross-Austin American-Statesman

By the end, "A Band Called Death" doesn't just uncover a new chapter in punk history. It lets you to experience it.
Eric Kohn-indieWIRE

These docs often conclude with some sort of triumphant reunion tour, but it's more heartwarming than usual to see children paying tribute to their parents by covering their ancient songs.
Mike D'Angelo-AV Club

The music's better than the stories.
Matt Pais-RedEye

Captures the joy of music, the remarkable influence it can have on future talents, and the importance of appeasing nothing but the creative drive within.
Brian Tallerico-HollywoodChicago.com

The film is made impetuously watchable and disarmingly emotional by the filmmakers' strong command of docudrama and nonfiction narrative style.
Drew Hunt-Slant Magazine

A very good movie about a very bad band!

Laurence Anyways Movie Review

At nearly three hours, it's entirely too long, needlessly padded out with an intrusive interview-framing device.
Farran Smith Nehme-New York Post

[Mr. Dolan] perfectly evokes the violating effect of a stranger's scrutiny and the imponderable depths of a lover's gaze.
Jeannette Catsoulis-New York Times

For all of its transgender drama, "Laurence Anyways" remains a love story, pure but not so simple.
Jeff Shannon-Seattle Times

Without belittling the challenges and prejudices Laurence faces, Dolan places her story into larger contexts, posing questions about conformity, heartbreak, love and self-fulfillment.
Tomas Hachard-NPR

Forgive this film its marvelous moodiness-someone needs to go there once in a while.
Joshua Rothkopf-Time Out New York

Both deeply refreshing and important.
Calum Marsh-Village Voice

Laurence Anyways, Xavier Dolan's third film, acknowledges the messiness of transgendered life, and the sizeable gaps between tolerance, acceptance, and actually going to bed with someone.
Violet Lucca-Film Comment Magazine

Dolan, now on his third film, is confident. He takes his time. The movie is long enough and covers a great enough time span that the word "epic" will be thrown at it.
Joe Peeler-Paste Magazine

This frequently brilliant epic does more than make us understand the challenges faced by trans people and those who love them - it makes us feel those challenges ourselves.
Brian Juergens-AfterElton.com

Laurence Anyways contains a voice so pronounced, and so specific, that Dolan is going to be one to watch for years to come.
Kevin Jagernauth-The Playlist

Xavier Dolan's refreshing and extraordinary achievement here is fiercely telling a grand tale with the most universal of themes (love), and carefully exempting it from victimization while not avoiding the social issues that surround it.
Tomris Laffly-Film Journal International

A nearly three-hour epic, a melodrama writ large, and blessed with a young man's ambition.
A.A. Dowd-AV Club

It takes cojones for a filmmaker to chase Fassbinder's ghost, but it takes heart and talent to damn near catch up with it.
Chuck Bowen-Slant Magazine

There are frequent moments of genius where you are rendered blissfully immobile by the onscreen carryings-on; uncountable witticisms you wish you yourself had dashed off; and unbridled passions that hit the heavens and then bounce back harrowingly.
Brandon Judell-CultureCatch

The performances by Melvil Poupaud and Suzanne Clément as the struggling lovers are unforgettable.
Grant Butler-Oregonian

Dealing with transgender and amour fou, the third feature from Canada's enfant terrible Xavier Dolan is ambitious but way ovrlong and self-indulgent.
Emanuel Levy-EmanuelLevy.Com

This big, dreamy, audacious picture has larger questions about relationships and identity. Can anyone be true to his or her inner self in the context of romantic love?
Tara Brady-Irish Times

Poupaud and especially Clément's unaffected performances anchor the overlong film ...

Redemption Movie Review

Nothing in "Redemption" quite adds up, including the paranoid hero's insistence that he's being watched by drones.
Lou Lumenick-New York Post

Knight seems to want to say something, but it comes out pretty garbled.
Tom Long-Detroit News

A flawed but still solid debut. And another strong step forward for Jason Statham, the man who won't stay still.
Stephen Whitty-Newark Star-Ledger

"Redemption" doesn't have the chutzpah to let loose and be as dumb as it needs to be, so it instead bores the audience comatose with long stretches of sad-face Statham putzing around an apartment to justify the too-brief bursts of giddy bone-breaking.
Barbara VanDenburgh-Arizona Republic

Its narrative continuity is so sketchy and the screenplay so haphazard that the movie doesn't add up to more than trash, seasoned with pretentious religiosity.
Stephen Holden-New York Times

Statham uses his steely watchfulness and grim demeanor to draw us in. He and the film wind up engaging, even as the script stretches credibility.
Joe Neumaier-New York Daily News

Jason Statham is arguably the leading action star of his generation, but with Redemption, the feature directorial debut from talented screenwriter Steven Knight, he attempts to expand his range for the first time since The Bank Job.
Perry Seibert-TV Guide's Movie Guide

Some of it is hilariously awful, and some is just plain awful. But Statham's attempt to be taken seriously as an actor is honest, at least.
MaryAnn Johanson-Flick Filosopher

Jason Statham takes a darker role than usual in a gritty London drama that never quite seems sure of itself, as writer-turned-director Knight mashes several huge social issues with a hint of action and a rather awkward romance.
Rich Cline-Contactmusic.com

Kudos to Statham for having a go, but this is fitfully successful at best.
Trevor Johnston-Radio Times

It's really just an over-blown fashion shoot. Let's hope Jason got to keep the clothes.
Charlotte O'Sullivan-This is London

This is the film that introduces us to the Stath's sensitive side. If that hasn't put you off, it should.
Adam Woodward-Little White Lies

Taut and efficient at just 100 minutes, Hummingbird gains added atmosphere from having been shot mostly at night in London while Statham can even make a spoon resemble a lethal weapon.
Graham Young-Birmingham Mail

Redemption nearly works. It's one of those truly frustrating films in that there are numerous scenes & moments that work but Knight can't quite fashion them into a whole that's not a disappointment. But he comes damn close.
Brian Tallerico-HollywoodChicago.com

Look beyond the generic shell, and this wildly imperfect movie appears to have a rare soul lurking inside it.
Bilge Ebiri-Vulture

Like Joey, audiences may suffer post-traumatic stress after this one.
Peter Bradshaw-Guardian [UK]

It's a dark, tough and unyieldingly violent movie that disdains action movie clichés and gives Statham his most dramatically complex, challenging movie character so far, one executed with surprising compassion, even vulnerability.
Dann Gire-Daily Herald (IL)

Hummingbird's richly nutty premise grips from moment to moment, and Statham bolsters his reputation as master of the absurdist threat.
Robbie Collin-Daily Telegraph

This has plenty of atmosphere and shows that Statham has the chops for more dramatic fare, while keeping fans happy with some bone-crunching action.
Henry Fitzherbert-Daily Express

Byzantium Movie Review

"Byzantium" dares to rework "Twilight" with twice the teen moping and Robert Pattinson replaced by a guy with the sexual magnetism of a sickly Ron Weasley.
Kyle Smith-New York Post

"Byzantium's" appeal is not so much its bite, which could use some refining, but the emotional journey its undead take. In Jordan's hands, the vampires are so very human.
Betsy Sharkey-Los Angeles Times

This feels tired as storytelling despite some evocative imagery and typically lush camerawork.
Ben Sachs-Chicago Reader

Again and again, as the story shifts between women, times and moods, Mr. Jordan adds a punctuating flourish ... that exquisitely illustrates the once-upon-a-time mood.
Manohla Dargis-New York Times

Unfortunately, the story never grabs hold as insistently as Jordan's tone and visual artistry.
Ian Buckwalter-NPR

Despite multiple graphic beheadings and literal waterfalls of blood, the film generates a shockingly small amount of horror.
Colin Covert-Minneapolis Star Tribune

The revamped vampire mythology put forth in Byzantium is much more fascinating than the actual story the movie sets out to tell.
Ethan Alter-Television Without Pity

With Twilight finally over, we're not exactly hungering for more vampire movies, but Neil Jordan gives us something to savour with Byzantium, his second bite at the genre.
Radheyan Simonpillai-NOW Toronto

Jordan's greatest strengths are found in Ronan, whose bloodless eyes speak volumes, and her relationship with Jones, which has real warmth, despite the subject matter.
Anders Wright-San Diego Union-Tribune

Characters that don't work and a stylistic approach by Jordan that doesn't give the give the piece the personality it needs to be considered as more than an arthouse Twilight.
Brian Tallerico-HollywoodChicago.com

Director Neil Jordan takes another look at vampires in this most original and beautiful-and adult-movie treatment of the genre to date.
Shirley Sealy-Film Journal International

There's a fine and dark Romantic soul to this film ... but it's not enough to compensate for a story that spins in circles predictable as a carnival ride, only not as exhilarating.
Chris Barsanti-Film Racket

A stylish vampire movie that confuses complication for complexity.
Dann Gire-Daily Herald (IL)

Jordan hopes to go out with a bang, but it doesn't work in a picture with such unusual elements as Byzantium, which is far more compelling with sensuality and mystery than cliched aggression.
Brian Orndorf-Blu-ray.com

You could tell what Jordan was trying to do with his "Interview With the Vampire." He finally gets it right here.
Chris Hewitt (St. Paul)-St. Paul Pioneer Press

Jordan, a master of mood, creates an unsettling atmosphere of small-town despair, and the film's sporadic spikes of violence ... are often inventive.
A.A. Dowd-AV Club

Everyone's heard it before. You're a vampire. Get over it.

I'm So Excited! Movie Review

'I'm So Excited' is bursting with color, sass and sexiness ... it maintains a light feel throughout.
Glenn Kenny-MSN Movies

A campy, sex-obsessed spoof of airborne-disaster movies that never really gets off the ground.
Lou Lumenick-New York Post

I can't remember when, if ever, Pedro Almodóvar has had as much flamboyant fun as he does in the high-flying comedy "I'm So Excited!"
Betsy Sharkey-Los Angeles Times

[An] airless, uninvolving movie.
Manohla Dargis-New York Times

For all its jazzy formalism and bedroom-eyes bravado ... the movie feels uninvolving, a tribute to Hollywood screwball that's ultimately more wearyingly prankish than transgressive.
Ella Taylor-NPR

Some of it qualifies as first-class hilarity, and all of the acting is superb.
Joe Morgenstern-Wall Street Journal

Almodóvar has opted for a return to the outrageous sexual humor that put him on the map.
Leonard Maltin-Leonard Maltin's Picks

A frolicsome comedy with colorful characters including three airline stewards who do a hilarious version of the Pointer Sisters' classic song.
Frederic and Mary Ann Brussat-Spirituality and Practice

A tossing off of the frock, and a sprint through fields of naked bodies, Valencia cocktails, and public sexual activity.
Witney Seibold-CraveOnline

Secret agendas become known, new relationships form, but by the time the plane lands in a puddle of soap suds, the film's already becoming a distant memory.
Laura Clifford-Reeling Reviews

I'm So Excited! would seem to be an easy one for this filmmaker and something of a return to form. But the cocktail of cabaret and disaster-flick theatrics has less pop to it than one would imagine; too much sugar and not enough bite.
Chris Barsanti-Film Journal International

After establishing a jaunty tone with its candy-colored, Saul Bass-style opening credits, the film racks up a high strain-to-laugh ratio; there's a sense Almodóvar can't quite keep track of all his gags.

Neil McCauley (Robert De Niro) is a thief who specializes in big, risky jobs, such as banks and armored cars. He's very good at what he does; he's bright, methodical, and has honed his skills as a thief at the expense of his personal life, vowing never to get involved in a relationship from which he couldn't walk away in 30 seconds. Vincent Hanna (Al Pacino) is an L.A.P.D. detective determined to catch McCauley, but while McCauley's personal code has forced him to do without a wife and children, Hanna's dedication has made a wreck of the home he's tried to have; he's been divorced twice, he's all but a stranger to his third wife, and he has no idea how to reach out to his troubled step-daughter. While McCauley has enough money to retire and is planning to move to New Zealand, he loves the thrill of robbery as much as the profit, and is blocking out plans for one more job; meanwhile, he's met a woman, Eady (Amy Brenneman), whom he's not so sure he can walk away from. Heat Movie Review

Heat occupies an exalted position among the countless contemporary crime films.
Todd McCarthy-Variety

Robert De Niro's last great role before he devoted himself to self-parody.
Peter Travers-Rolling Stone

This is simply the best American crime movie -- and indeed, one of the finest movies, period -- in over a decade.
Geoff Andrew-Time Out

As Heat progresses, its sensational looks pale beside storytelling weaknesses that expose the more soulless aspects of this cat-and-mouse crime tale.
Janet Maslin-New York Times

Michael Mann and a superlative cast have taken a classic heist movie rife with familiar genre elements and turned it into a sleek, accomplished piece of work, meticulously controlled and completely involving.
Kenneth Turan-Los Angeles Times

Heat generates lots of energy but gives off little light.
Sean Means-Film.com

The conversation in Heat is one of the most perfectly executed and eloquently intertextual moments in the history of American Cinema.
Blake Howard-2UE That Movie Show

A stealth epic, framing an urban jungle and making its own kind of contemporary history by pairing acting giants Robert DeNiro and Al Pacino in what has arguably become the preminent cops-and-robbers movie. [Blu-ray]
Peter Canavese-Groucho Reviews

Quite rightly, this confirmed Mann as one of Hollywood's smartest, most stylish and emotionally articulate directors.
-Film4

I have always wondered if Pacino and De Niro flipped a coin before the movie began shooting to see which of them would play which part?
John J. Puccio-Movie Metropolis

A slow-moving, overburdened, well-meant and at times quite entertaining slog.
Tim Brayton-Antagony & Ecstasy

The director's signature sleek and romantic aesthetic is reason enough to take a seat for this operatic three-hour marathon.
Radheyan Simonpillai-AskMen.com

Fascinante por se concentrar em dois homens que, obcecados por suas profissões, acabam dependendo um do outro justamente por não saberem fazer outra coisa.
Pablo Villaca-Cinema em Cena

I admire Mann's emotional commitment and his sense of style, but it also grates on me.
Bob Westal-Bullz-Eye.com

With De Niro and Pacino in excellent form, Mann's Heat ignites the screen.
Chuck O'Leary-Fantastica Daily

De Niro delivers a frightening vision of frosty criminal efficiency.
Nick Schager-Lessons of Darkness

It is a remarkably powerful, entertaining and invigorating piece of cinema that hits on more levels than seemingly possible.
Derek Smith-Cinematic Reflections

Heat Heat has an intoxicating, seductive look and feel, and if viewers can check their brains at the door, it succeeds on a surface level.
Jeffrey M. Anderson-Combustible Celluloid

...one of the greatest crime films of all time.
Chris Barsanti-Film Threat

Echoes the tradition of American individualists.
Jeremiah Kipp-Slant Magazine

An insightful dramatic look at the relationship between cops, criminals, and the women in their lives.
Michael Dequina-TheMovieReport.com

Riveting cops-and-robbers tale.
