Four years later, he returns to the bard's work with this lively version of one of Shakespeare's best comedies. Don Pedro (Denzel Washington), the Prince of Aragon, returns victorious from battle to the praises of the Governor of Messina, Leonato (Richard Briers). One of Don Pedro's bravest men, Claudio (Robert Sean Leonard), falls in love with Hero (Kate Beckinsale), Leonato's daughter, and they plan to marry. However, Don Pedro's devious half-brother Don John (Keanu Reeves) opposes the match, and he devises a plan to turn Hero against Claudio. Meanwhile, Benedict (Branagh), Don Pedro's second-in-command, detests Leonato's niece Beatrice (Emma Thompson), but Don Pedro cleverly brings them together by making each think that the other is secretly in love with them. Much Ado About Nothing also features Michael Keaton in a showy turn as Dogberry. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Much Ado About Nothing Movie Review

Continuously enjoyable from its action-filled opening to the dazzling final shot...
Todd McCarthy-Variety

There's much to commend in Branagh's pruned, international version of Shakespeare's troubling comedy.
Derek Adams-Time Out

Kenneth Branagh...has done it again.
Vincent Canby-New York Times

The picture is overripe, and with few exceptions, so are the performances.
Peter Travers-Rolling Stone

The key to the film's success is in the acting, especially in the sparks that fly between Branagh and Thompson.
Roger Ebert-Chicago Sun-Times

Somehow, the movie feels insubstantial and uninspired.
Hal Hinson-Washington Post

Very accessible, jubilant Shakespeare with brief bawdiness.
Carrie R. Wheadon-Common Sense Media

Branagh's highly entertaining and accessible take on one of the Bard's zestiest comedies. [Blu-ray]
Peter Canavese-Groucho Reviews

A joyous romp whose forced jollity is only occasionally wearing.
-TV Guide's Movie Guide

You can not fault Branagh's enthusiasm and his successful campaign to bring the Bard to the masses.
-Film4

Although Kenneth Branagh's interpretation does much to make Shakespeare's play comprehensible, it ultimately fails to create any kind of enduring watchability.
Rachel Sanders-Apollo Guide

A lively and colorful adaptation of Shakespeare's play; Thompson and Branagh are especially fun to watch.
Bob Bloom-Journal and Courier (Lafayette, IN)

This film is going to entertain even those viewers who care little about Shakespeare and care about his comedies even less.
Dragan Antulov-rec.arts.movies.reviews

Unevenly cast but ebulliently filmed, the film is a treasure for the Branagh-Thompson scenes alone.
Nick Davis-Nick's Flick Picks

A lot of fun! Branagh does excellent bringing Shakespeare's comedy to life.
Alex Sandell-Juicy Cerebellum

Wonderful rendering of Shakespeare's comedy. Branagh and Thompson shine. Wish I could say the same for Keanu.
Brian Mckay-eFilmCritic.com

A fun adaptation of Shakespeare that only suffers from some unfortunate casting, especially with Keaton and Keanu.
Widgett Walls-Needcoffee.com

Both perfectly classic and remarkably fresh.
James Rocchi-Netflix

All-star laughs, romance and hijinks!
Clint Morris-Moviehole

Branagh once again proves he can out-Shakespeare even the Bard himself.
Chuck Rudolph-Matinee Magazine

Inventively celebrates the sense of heightened vitality which is at the core of all Shakespeare's comedies.
Frederic and Mary Ann Brussat-Spirituality and Practice

One longs for genuine bursts of cinematic poetry instead of all the overemphatic gusto.
Stephen Farber-Movieline
